Denzel Hayes Washington Jr., born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, is an American actor and producer. He is widely recognized for his dramatic performances across film and theater. His career honors include two Academy Awards, a Tony Award, two Golden Globes, two Silver Bears, and an Actor Award, plus nominations for a Grammy and two Primetime Emmys. In 2020, *The New York Times* called him the greatest actor of the 21st century. He has also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award (2016), the AFI Life Achievement Award (2019), the Honorary Palme d’Or (2025), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2025). The films he has appeared in have earned more than $5.1 billion globally.
Washington trained at the American Conservatory Theater and began his career in off-Broadway theater. He won a Tony for Best Actor in a Play for playing a disillusioned working-class father in the 2010 Broadway revival of August Wilson’s *Fences*. He has also appeared in Broadway revivals of *Julius Caesar* (2005), *A Raisin in the Sun* (2014), *The Iceman Cometh* (2018), and *Othello* (2025).
